Payment service provider

As a payment service provider ( PSP , English for payment service ) to companies dedicated to the technical connection of online payment methods in designated online shops care. Examples of such payment methods are PayPal , Giropay , Sofortüberweisung or credit card providers such as Mastercard and Visacard .

Services

Instead of having to deal with many individual contractual partners, if an online retailer decides on a PSP, they only have to negotiate with one provider in order to integrate the desired payment methods. In most cases, it is a software-as-a-service licensing through which many payment methods can be individually switched on and off with just a few clicks.

Many payment service providers also offer additional services from risk management to debt collection upon request. A payment service provider saves an online retailer a lot of work in this way.

Limits

The intermediary PSP means that there is no customer relationship between the retailer and the payment solution. This enables customer service in the form of special offers or conflict resolution, e.g. B. in the event of payment defaults.

Each dealer remains responsible for his own actions, i. This means that he himself must ensure that the selected provider complies with the guidelines regarding security, data protection, etc. (see also PCI-DSS guidelines). Even if the retailer usually only rents the technology, it is questionable whether the PSP will take responsibility if a security gap becomes known and the retailer does nothing to protect its customers.
