Sweet Sixteen (Sports)

The term Sweet Sixteen is used in the field of sports and refers to a tournament round with the remaining 16 teams in a competition that have emerged from one or more preliminary rounds.

The origin of the term can be found in the US university sports association National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), where it is used in the NCAA Division I basketball championship and describes the third main round. Meanwhile, the round of 16 of the national competitions in the United States and numerous international competitions are referred to as Sweet Sixteen or Sweet 16.
