Giropay ( original spelling giropay ) is a final online payment method used by parts of the German banking industry . It is based on the transfer via online banking and has been specially optimized for the requirements of e-commerce . In addition, the service offers KJM-compliant online age verification and online account verification via the Giropay-ID brand ( original spelling giropay -ID) .

structure

Giropay GmbH was founded in 2005 by Postbank , Star Finanz (a subsidiary of the Sparkassenrechenzentrum Finanz Informatik ) as well as Fiducia IT and GAD (computer centers of the cooperative financial association, i.e. the Volksbanken Raiffeisenbanken). The task of Giropay GmbH is u. a. to define terms of use (rules & regulations) for users. Distribution to dealers takes place via so-called acquirers (ultimately licensees).

Based on the online transfer, Giropay promises buyers easy, fast and secure online payments. Sellers should be able to completely eliminate their risk of payment default by receiving an immediate payment guarantee.

Fig. 2: Example of shopping on the Internet with online transfer, e.g. B. Giropay

A Giropay customer does not need any separate registration or additional software to pay for online purchases . The requirement for using Giropay is a current account that has been activated for online banking via PIN / TAN . HBCI chip cards are not supported. In addition, the customer's credit institution must participate in Giropay, which is currently being done by over 1,500 banks and savings banks. Postbank , Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe , Volksbanken , Raiffeisenbanken , Comdirect Bank , Deutsche Kreditbank and other regional banks offer Giropay. On September 9, 2019, Giropay announced that almost all German bank customers will be able to pay with Giropay in the future if they have an online current account. The banks that have not yet participated are to be gradually connected from the 4th quarter.

A merchant who wants to offer his customers Giropay as a payment method requires an acceptance contract from an acquirer, similar to the one used for credit cards . Solutions for technical integration into the online shop are offered by the acquirer and / or by so-called payment service providers (PSP). With direct sales, everything is done from a single source; the acquirer contract and technical integration are offered by GiroSolution GmbH.

Process of the payment process

Payment is made directly from the customer's current account . For this purpose, he selects the Giropay payment method in a corresponding online shop and must also name the bank (e.g. by entering the bank code or BIC) with which he manages his current account. In online shops with stored, personal customer profiles, this step is not necessary if the customer has stored the bank code or BIC in their profile. As soon as the customer clicks on Pay in the online shop , he is automatically forwarded to the login page of his online banking, where he logs in with his known data (account number or login name plus PIN ). After logging in successfully, he is presented with an online transfer that has been filled in with all of the data and can no longer be changed. By entering a transaction number (TAN), the customer authorizes the payment. Since April 2016 it has been possible for participating banks and savings banks to forego entering a TAN for amounts up to EUR 30. The transfer data is displayed again on the logout page and the customer is directed back to the online shop.

The use of Giropay is basically free of charge for the buyer. Another advantage for the buyer is the high level of data security, because he only gives the retailer or another third party the bank code. He gives all personal and security-relevant data (login name or user number, PIN, TAN) in the protected dialog of online banking with his bank. In order to be able to give the merchant the security that the payment arrives, unlike other methods, no third party has to be given the option of checking the account balance or checking creditworthiness.

An important feature of the process is that the merchant as the payee receives an irrevocable payment guarantee immediately after the successful Giropay transfer. Although the transfer is processed through the normal clearing channels, the online retailer has an immediate guarantee that the value of the goods will be credited to his account. In contrast to direct debits , electronic direct debit or credit card payments, there is no risk of default with this method. Therefore, giropay is a final payment method.

Use for customers

In the future, more than 45 million customers in Germany should be able to use Giropay for online payments; as of January 2018, over 35 million customers can do so. Customers who want to use Giropay only need an online banking current account at a participating bank or savings bank. An extra registration for the use of Giropay is not necessary, since buyers simply use the online banking of the respective bank or savings bank.

Banks that allow their customers to pay via Giropay include: a. Postbank , various savings banks and PSD banks , Deutsche Kreditbank , Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken , GLS Community Bank , Comdirect Bank , Merkur Privatbank , MLP AG , Cronbank , Bankhaus Ellwanger & Geiger , Bankhaus Bauer and CVW Privatbank AG. From the 4th quarter of 2019, “almost” all of the previously missing banks will be connected, so that almost every online banking customer should be able to pay with Giropay.

Use for dealers

Since 2012 it has been possible for retailers to conclude an acceptance contract for Giropay directly on www.giropay.de. For this, Giropay GmbH uses the acquirer GiroSolution . Dealers can have an acceptance contract drawn up with an individual offer and receive various free plug-ins for standard shop software to download.

In addition, acceptance contracts can be concluded with a total of 12 acquirers (as of January 19, 2018): EVO Payments International, Postbank, Payone , VR-Bank Westmünsterland , Volksbank in der Ortenau eG , WGZ Bank , DZ Bank , Raiffeisenlandesbank Oberösterreich , Wirecard , Concardis , PPRO Financial and GiroSolution . The acquirers in turn work with various payment service providers (PSP) to implement Giropay technically in the online shops. However, some acquirers also offer the technical integration themselves - without a separate PSP.

The fees that the merchant has to bear for the use of Giropay are agreed individually depending on the acquirer. For price orientation: In direct sales on www.giropay.de, the acquirer GiroSolution promises a maximum fee of 0.89% of sales, min. EUR 0.33 per transaction plus PSP fee (as of April 4, 2016).

safety

Giropay uses the security standards of online banking. The PIN-TAN procedure is currently primarily implemented as the authentication procedure, whereby iTAN , mTAN or any other optimized TAN procedure (e.g. chipTAN ) can be used. These partially outdated bank TAN procedures are often not single-device capable and therefore only suitable to a limited extent for m-commerce.

In contrast to offers from third parties (e.g. instant transfer ), Giropay is, in addition to Paydirekt, a process that is legitimized by banks and savings banks. The buyer only enters his personal bank details (PIN and TAN) on the website of his bank. With Giropay, as with a normal transfer, the customer waives the right to withdraw from the transfer by entering his TAN. A chargeback, as is the case with payments with credit cards , Paydirekt and direct debit , is not possible. Therefore, the customer has to resort to the reimbursement procedures offered by the online retailer.

internationalization

The two online transfer processes Giropay from Germany and eps online transfer from Austria have networked their two systems. In this way, the two previously purely national payment methods create interoperability between their systems, which allows retailers to use the other method via the same interface using the method already connected. The networking of the two payment methods gives retailers the opportunity to address a total of up to 40 million online banking customers in Germany and Austria.

The interoperability of both procedures was kept open, so that other European online transfer procedures can participate via the integration of the defined interface.

The eps online transfer for merchants and customers works just like Giropay: the merchant receives a real-time payment guarantee from the buyer's bank or savings bank, is 100% protected against payment defaults and can send the goods immediately. The customer uses the usual online banking, whereby he only enters sensitive data such as PIN and TAN on the pages of his bank or savings bank. Almost all banks and savings banks in Austria take part in eps.

Giropay ID

Giropay-ID is a verification system that enables customers to prove that they are of legal age (age verification) or their account details (account verification) to online providers. Like the payment method, Giropay-ID is based on online banking with PIN and TAN and is only supported by participating banks and savings banks in Germany. Online providers pay 0.49 euros per verification to the offering bank or savings bank (as of October 2017).

Instead of a transfer (as when paying by Giropay), the customer instructs his house bank to inform the online provider that he is of legal age when verifying his age with Giropay ID. This receives at least the information whether the customer has reached the age to be checked and the full name. Merchants can also offer their customers a combination of online age verification with Giropay ID and online transfer with Giropay. In this case, a TAN is used to query the age of majority and to pay for the goods at the same time. Giropay-ID's online age verification system meets the requirements of current youth protection and was therefore rated positively by the Commission for Youth Media Protection (KJM).

When verifying the account with Giropay-ID, the customer instructs his house bank to confirm his account details (IBAN, BIC and name of the account holder) to the merchant. A combination of account verification and payment is currently not offered.
