paydirekt is an online payment method for German banks and savings banks . It is operated by paydirekt GmbH .
functionality
To be able to register for paydirekt for the first time, customers need a current account at a participating bank or savings bank with online banking access. Via a link that can be found there, the account holder can access the paydirekt user registration, in which he defines his user name and password for paydirekt. Then paydirekt can be used as a payment method. Username and password must be entered before completing a purchase. Occasionally, the payment is checked using a TAN query.
Just like giropay , but in contrast to other payment services (e.g. instant transfer ), paydirekt is not a third-party provider , but an additional function of the current account. Payment is processed directly through the buyer's checking account and sent to the merchant's account. The account information is not passed on to the merchant or a third party provider. paydirekt acts as a central software service for payment processing. When processing payments, paydirekt collects transaction data that go beyond the scope of a normal transfer. This includes, for example, the delivery address and, if applicable, the individual items in a shopping cart (if the shop operator transmits these to paydirekt). Since the system is operated in Germany, German data protection and German banking secrecy apply . All payments are displayed on the account statement, in online banking and the paydirekt app. If the account has sufficient funds , the retailer receives an immediate confirmation of the payment after the entry and can send the goods.
Since the beginning of July 2017, users of the service have also been able to transfer money to one another using a corresponding app. Initially, the new function will be tested in a beta phase and will be available to customers of Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, comdirect, Hypovereinsbank, Oldenburgischer Landesbank and Postbank. The service is to be gradually made available to customers of the cooperative financial group (Raiffeisen banks and Volksbanks).
Paydirekt GmbH stores transaction data from paydirekt payments. This data includes a transaction ID and a transaction reference. In addition, information on the content of the shopping cart is saved, which paydirekt GmbH receives from the merchant, provided that he supports this. This data enables paydirekt GmbH and the bank to identify the transaction so that it can be assigned very precisely to the respective customer.
Paydirekt GmbH transmits transaction data to the bank for the processing of refunds, among other things. In the case of paydirekt payments with an abbreviated purchase process, paydirekt GmbH transmits the delivery and billing addresses stored by the participant to the relevant retailer, from which the participant can select the desired address. The bank authorizes payments to the merchant through the involvement of paydirekt GmbH. Payments with paydirekt are often advertised as an internal bank function.
Participating banks
In August 2016 the following banks with over 1,400 individual institutes were connected to paydirekt: 1822direkt , Comdirect , Commerzbank , Consorsbank , Degussa Bank , Deutsche Bank , Flessabank , Hypovereinsbank , GLS Bank , ING-DiBa , National-Bank , Norisbank , Oldenburgische Landesbank , Postbank , PSD banks , Santander , Sparda banks , savings banks , Baden-Württembergische Bank , Südwestbank , Targobank as well as Volks- and Raiffeisenbanken .
history
The paydirekt payment service entered the pilot phase in August 2015 with the participation of 40 banks. Both private banks and the cooperative banks as well as the savings banks were involved . On August 17, 2015, a customer's first transaction was made.
The participations are distributed as follows:
- 33.33% GIZS (for SparkassenFinanzgruppe)
- 33.33% DZ Bank (for Volksbank and Raiffeisenbanken)
- 16.67% Commerzbank / Comdirect
- 16.67% Deutsche Bank / Postbank
On January 15, 2019, it was announced that paydirekt Beteiligungsgesellschaft privater Banken mbH (ING, HVB, Targobank, OLB, Degussa Bank and National-Bank, Santander, Südwestbank, Flessabank, MLP, Volkswagen Bank and Consorsbank) held their 11.1% stake terminated paydirekt on December 31, 2019. As a result, half of the shares in the pool banks that had become available were taken over by Commerzbank and Deutsche Bank on January 1, 2020. They thus increased their respective share from 11.1% to 16.67%.
Operating company
Paydirekt GmbH is responsible for setting up, operating and developing the payment process. It employs around 50 people and is based in Frankfurt am Main. The managing directors are Niklas Bartelt and Helmut Wißmann. The company emerged on June 25, 2015 (entry in the commercial register) from the GIMB Gesellschaft für Internet- und mobile Payments mbH , Frankfurt am Main , founded in 2014 - through a change of company . Business operations began in the second half of 2015.
Competitors and criticism
The online payment service PayPal claims to have over 23 million active customers in Germany (as of 2019). Almost 900 of the largest online shops in Germany accept online payment with PayPal. Therefore, criticism was raised that the market entry was too late, that the payment method was not initially advertised by the banks and that it was not implemented in a user-friendly manner. In addition to PayPal, there are numerous other payment services on the market in Germany as competitors, for example Sofortüberweisung , giropay and Amazon Pay . At the end of 2015, market participants also did not consider the effects on the Wirecard payment service to be too great. The savings banks are currently trying to automatically register with paydirekt by changing the terms and conditions. This is being investigated by the state data protection authorities. In 2018 it became known that only around 40,000 transactions are made via Paydirekt per month.
The automatic transfer of master data from Sparkasse customers to paydirekt was criticized in the media in 2017, unless this explicitly contradicts it.
Paydirekt provides a short-term buyer protection: "A conflict can only be reported for a payment for which no suspected case has yet been reported and which is no more than 30 calendar days ago."
