Payn de Turberville (nobleman, † 1130)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Payn de Turberville (also Paganus or Payn I de Turberville ) ( bl. 1126-1130) was a Norman nobleman. He is the first known member of the Turberville family , named after Thouberville in Normandy .

According to records from Neath Abbey and the Book of Llandaff , Payn de Turberville was a retainer of Earl Robert of Gloucester , who owned large areas of south-east Wales. When Earl Robert conquered further areas of western Glamorgan from the Welsh, Turberville was probably given the rule of Coety north of Ogmore in the 1120s . It is possible that he had received Coety from Robert Fitzhamon before 1106 and built Coity Castle there as a ring wall . Turberville was also referred to as The Demon ( Welsh Y Cythraul ), although it is not clear why he received this dirty name. He is only mentioned in documents in 1126 and 1129. Allegedly, he is said to have first married the daughter of the Welsh chief von Coety. According to another story, he gave Robert Fitzhamon such a huge blow that it made him mad. But these stories have no historical basis.

Turberville married Sibyl de Londres . She came from the family of the Lords of Ogmore and brought Siblewick on the River Alun and land at Corntown and Heronston near Ogmore into the marriage. Turberville had at least two sons with her:

Turberville divided his property between his two sons: while the younger Simon inherited the goods that his mother had brought into the marriage, the older Gilbert Coety inherited.
