The Peace Arch as seen from the American side

The Peace Arch (dt. Peace Arch ) is a monument at the Canada-US border , between the cities of Surrey in the province of British Columbia and Blaine in the State of Washington . It is located exactly on the border line in Peace Arch Park , in the median of Highway 99 and Interstate 5 .

The tall monument commemorates the Peace of Ghent in 1814, which ended the British-American War . It was built on behalf of the entrepreneur Samuel Hill and inaugurated in September 1921. Hill wanted to set a visible sign of the more than a hundred years of peaceful relations between the United States and the United Kingdom (or Dominion Canada ).

The all-white Peace Arch has the shape of a neoclassical portico and is 20.5 meters high. The American and Canadian flags fly on its roof. On the frieze two are inscriptions: On the US side is "Children of a common mother" (children of a common parent) , on the Canadian "Brethren dwelling together in unity" (brothers who dwell together in unity) . Under the arch there is an always open gate with the inscription "May these gates never be closed" ( May these gates never be closed ) .
