The Peacock Subglacial Trench (English: Peacock Subglacial Trench ) is a depression completely covered by glacial ice with a north-south orientation in the middle of the East Antarctic Wilkesland . It represents the extension of the Aurora subglacial basin and is located south of Dome Charlie and west of the Belgica subglacial highlands .
Its extent was determined by sonar tracking as part of a joint program of the Scott Polar Research Institute , the National Science Foundation and Denmark's Technical University between 1967 and 1979. It is named after the USS Peacock , one of the ships of the United States Exploring Expedition (1838–1842) under the direction of polar explorer Charles Wilkes .
