The Belgica subglacial highlands comprise a group of high plateaus that are completely covered by continental glacial ice . The highlands are located southeast of Dome Charlie in the east Antarctic Wilkesland and, with a north-south extension, separates the Peacock subglacial ditch from the Adventure subglacial ditch .
Its extent was determined by sonar tracking as part of a joint program of the Scott Polar Research Institute , the National Science Foundation and Denmark's Technical University between 1967 and 1979. The namesake for the highlands is the Belgica , the ship of the Antarctic expedition of the same name (1897–1899) of the Belgian polar explorer Adrien de Gerlache de Gomery .
