Grave slab of Giovanni di Bartolomeo Pecci

The Pecci grave slab is a bas-relief ascribed to Donatello and created between 1427 and 1452 in the cathedral of Siena ( Italy ) and is unique in the artist's work .

description

In 1875 Hans Semper (1845–1920) introduced the bronze Pecci grave slab into the Donatello literature. Giovanni di Bartolomeo Pecci was an apostolic pronotary , canon in Siena and bishop of Grosseto from 1417. He died there in 1426 and was buried in the cathedral of Siena and honored with Donatello's tombstone. The signature of the "OPUS DONATELLI", which according to the prevailing opinion is authentic, can be found in a barely visible place on the grave tablet. The facts are exhausted with the information provided by the factory itself. The research has therefore limited itself to an integration between 1427 and 1452.

Studies highlight the perspective structure of the bas-relief and the consistency of the execution, which is not achieved in any other grave slab Donatello. With a perspective oriented towards a fixed point of view of the observer, he created the illusion of a body laid out in front of an altar for the period of the funeral mass. The arrangement refers to the altar of the Sienese patron saint Sant'Ansano , in front of whose steps the grave slab was inserted into the floor. As early as 1420, the Cappella di Sant'Ansano was located in the corner between the choir chapel and the northern arm of the transept. The Pecci grave slab, mentioned for the first time in 1458 in the inventory of the cathedral and located in the center of the choir, is undoubtedly in its current position in front of the St. Ansanus Chapel, not in its original place.
