Pedro António Correia Garção

Pedro António Joaquim Correia da Serra Garçao e Salema (born April 29, 1724 in Lisbon , Portugal ; † November 10, 1772 ibid) was a neoclassical Portuguese poet. He is considered one of the most important neoclassicists in the literary history of Portugal.

Life

Correia Garçao was born into a wealthy family to Philippe Correia da Serra and a French woman. As a child he learned French, English and Italian. He first studied Classical Literature at the Jesuit College in Lisbon and then switched to the legal subject, which he studied at the University of Coimbra , but without a degree. He then worked as an administrator in the Casa da India. In 1750 he was even made Knight of the Order of Christ . He married Dona Maria Salema in 1751 and became very rich from the dowry .

In 1756 he was involved in founding the " Arcadia Lusitania ". He was also literary editor of the Gazeta de Lisboa , from 1760 to 1762. His poetic work included satires , odes , epistles and sonnets . He had also left two plays in which he especially mocked the Lisbon bourgeoisie.

The " Arcadia Lusitania " was a literary secret society . It was officially supported by the government and was intended to counter reformist and liberal goals. It paid homage to the Greek and Roman classics, especially in the form of poetry and literature. The members met to read from their works and to criticize and receive one another. Each member had a pseudonym, Correia Garçaos was " Corydon Erimateu ".

Garçao's most important contribution to Portuguese literature was the " Cantada de Dido ", the song of Dido, a poem that was based on the fourth book of the Aeneid by Virgil . The poem, which is very important for Portugal, was even translated into English. Garçao is awarded the title of "second Horace of Portugal".

In 1771 he was sent to prison for circumstances that have not yet been clarified, where he died on November 10, 1772, exactly on the day on which he was to be pardoned by the Marques de Pombal .
