Pedro Coronel Arroyo

Pedro Coronel Arroyo (born March 25, 1923 in Zacatecas , † May 23, 1985 in Mexico City ) was a Mexican painter, draftsman, graphic artist and sculptor .

Coronel, son of Pedro Melesio Coronel and his wife Juana Arroyo Luna, went to Mexico City after completing primary school at the Instituto de Ciencias , where he painted and sculpted at the Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado "La Esmeralda" from 1940 to 1945 studied. During his stay in Paris from 1946 to 1948 he worked with Victor Brauner and Constantin Brâncuși . In 1950 he traveled through Belgium, France, Spain and North Africa and had his first solo exhibition in 1954 in the “Galería Proteo” in Mexico City. Exhibitions in France, Spain, Belgium, Italy, Japan, the United States and Brazil followed. At the II. Bienal Interamericana de México he was awarded the Premio Nacional de Pintura " José Clemente Orozco " in 1959 . In 1960 he exhibited in the Palacio de Bellas Artes and in 1965 in the Galería de Arte Mexicano . In 1966 he was awarded the Salón de Pintura Prize and in 1984 the National Art Prize, the Premio Nacional de Artes .

Coronel died in 1985 at the Humana Hospital as a result of a stroke . His body was first buried in the Panteón Francés de San Joaquin and transferred to his hometown a year later. There today a museum in the former Santo Domingo monastery and a street bears his name. The house where he was born is in today's Calle Allende in Zacatecas.

He was the brother of the artist Rafael Coronel Arroyo .
