Pedro Homem de Mello
Pedro da Cunha Pimentel Homem de Melo (born September 6, 1904 in Porto ; † March 5, 1984 ibid) was a Portuguese poet and lawyer. One of his poems was turned into a famous fado . He was also heavily involved in researching Portuguese dance culture.
His last name is sometimes incorrectly spelled "Mello", also in (a few) Portuguese sources.
Life
Pedro Homem de Melo studied law in Coimbra and Porto from 1926 and then worked as a lawyer. Later he also worked as a teacher and headmaster.
In 1939 he received the important Premio Antero de Quental .
His poetry was shaped by religious, popular, and sometimes even erotic poems that made him known throughout the country. In 1950 the Fadista Amália Rodrigues sang a famous Fado, the text of which was taken from a poem de Melos: Povo que lavos no rio . He was also involved in researching folk dance culture in Portugal and wrote standard works on it.
