The New Swakopmund Station ( english New Swakopmund station ) is the station of the coastal town of Swakopmund in Namibia . It is not far from the Swakopmund airfield on the eastern edge of the city. The station opened in 2015.

Old new train station

The former new train station was located near the center of the coastal city until it was demolished in mid-2014. Due to real estate developments on the site, the construction of the new train station at Swakopmund Airport was planned.

The reception building consisted of a one-story building with a small hall. The station had three tracks, two of which were through tracks. In addition to freight trains , the luxurious Desert Express and the TransNamib StarLine trains stopped here . It was on the Kranzberg – Walvis Bay railway line .

The station was built in 1993 about 500 meters east of the historic station building after TransNamib decided to close the historic station.

Historic train station

The (historical) Swakopmund train station was one of the first train stations in Namibia . It is located in the Swakopmund-Central district .

The historic station building was built in 1901 according to plans by the architect Carl Schmidt in the neo-renaissance style. Much of the work, however, was completed under the supervision and guidance of the architect Wilhelm Sander . In 1902 the station was part of the first line in what was then German South West Africa between Windhoek and Swakopmund. In 1972 the station building was recognized as a national monument .

Former railway lines at the historic train station:

  • Swakopmund – Windhoek (1902–1993)
  • Light Rail (1906-1915)
  • Otavibahn (1906-1993)
  • Swakopmund– Walvis Bay (1914–1980 old route directly on the Atlantic coast)
  • Swakopmund – Walvis Bay (1980–1993 new inland routing)

In 1993, TransNamib and the South African hotel group Legacy Group Holdings decided to convert the station building into a luxury hotel , the Swakopmund Hotel & Entertainment Center .
