Pedro Mariño de Lobeira (* 1528 in Pontevedra , Spain, † 1594 in Lima , Peru) was the chronicler of the Spanish king who described the conquest of Chile .

Pedro Mariño de Lobeira came to Peru in 1545 and traveled to Chile in 1551 . He became a chronicler under Pedro de Valdivia and took part in the campaigns against the Mapuche . After the death of Valdivia in the fortress Tucapel in 1553, he came under the command of the new governor of Chile García Hurtado de Mendoza , who persecuted the Mapuche even more mercilessly.

García Hurtado de Mendoza commissioned Pedro Mariño de Lobeira to write a chronicle of the conquest of Chile. The Chronicle Crónica del Reino de Chile is now considered the most important historical work from this period. However, the original has disappeared, there is only one copy that García Hurtado de Mendoza sent to the Jesuit priest Bartolomé de Escobar for proofreading.

The reports went directly to the Spanish king, so the work is not neutral and represents the view of the conquerors.

In 1562 he went to Lima in Peru. He was appointed administrator of the city of Valdivia and Camaná (south coast of Peru) for his services. On December 16, 1575, the city of Valdivia was destroyed by a strong earthquake and a few months later it was flooded by a huge mudslide from the dammed Lake Riñihue . Pedro Mariño de Lobeira took care of the reconstruction and help for the victims. He died in Lima in 1594.

However, his notes were not published until 1865 in Volume VI de la Colección de Historiadores de Chile y documentos relativos a la Historia Nacional .
