Pedro Simón
Pedro Simón (* 1574 in San Lorenzo de la Parrilla , Cuenca , Spain; † probably 1627 in Ubaté , Cundinamarca , Colombia) was a Spanish Franciscan , missionary, historian and Hispanist in Colombia.
life and work
Fray Pedro Simón OFM studied in Cartagena (Spain) , arrived in Cartagena de Indias in 1604 and spent the rest of his life in Colombia (then New Granada) and Venezuela . He worked in the area of Juan de Borja y Amendia, who was president of the Real Audiencia de Santa Fe de Bogotá from 1605 to 1628 . Simón left Noticias historiales de las conquistas de tierra firme en las Indias Occidentales , of which only the first volume appeared in Cuenca in 1627 and which were only published in 5 volumes in the late 19th century (Bogotà 1882–1892, 1953, 1963, 1982 ), but omitting the linguistically interesting Tabla para la inteligencia de algunos vocablos , a kind of early Americanism dictionary of 156 words published by Luis Carlos Mantilla Ruiz OFM in 1986 ( Fray Pedro Simón y su “Vocabulario de Americanismos” , Bogotá, 90 pages , with a tribute from Carlos Valderrama Andrade). When he was elected provincial in 1623, Simón began to write his work, based on the material he had gathered during his stay and numerous trips.
