Ubaté , official name Villa de San Diego de Ubaté is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Cundinamarca in Colombia .

geography

Ubaté is located in Cundinamarca , in the province of Ubaté , about 97 km from Bogotá at an altitude of 2556  m above sea level. NN and has an average temperature of 13 ° C. The municipality borders on Susa , Fúquene and Guachetá to the north, Lenguazaque to the east, Cucunubá and Sutatausa to the south and Carmen de Carupa to the west .

The municipality of Ubaté has 39,568 inhabitants, of which 25,847 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

The region around today's Ubaté was discovered for the Spaniards by Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada in 1537 . The place was founded in 1592 by Bernardo de Albornoz. The modern basilica was completed in 1939.

economy

The main industry in Ubaté is dairy farming . Agriculture ( potatoes and corn ) and cattle production also play an important role.
