El Peñón is a municipality ( municipio ) in the Colombian department of Cundinamarca .

El Peñón is located at an altitude of about 1310 meters in the north-west of Cundinamarca in the province of Rionegro , 121 km from Bogotá and has an average annual temperature of 21 ° C. The municipality borders Topaipí in the north, Vergara and Nimaima in the south, Pacho in the east and La Peña and La Palma in the west .

history

El Peñón was officially founded in 1822 under the name El Peñón de Terama with the establishment of a parish. The name El Peñón appeared for the first time around 1800, although settlement is documented earlier. Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the Teramas were indigenous people .
