Guataquí is a municipality ( municipio ) in the Colombian department of Cundinamarca .

geography

Guataquí is located in the southwest of Cundinamarca in the province of Alto Magdalena at an altitude of about 255 meters 176 km from Bogotá on the Río Magdalena . The municipality is bordered by Beltrán to the north, Nariño to the south, Jerusalén to the east and Coello and Piedras in the Tolima department to the west .

The municipality of Guataquí has 2711 inhabitants, of which 1413 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

Guataquí is considered the first river port of the upper reaches of the Río Magdalena. From Guataquí, Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada , Nikolaus Federmann and Sebastián de Belalcázar traveled back to Spain in 1539 after their campaigns of conquest. Even before their arrival, the Panche indigenous people lived in the area . The beginning of the settlement of the present place can be dated to 1656.

The main industries of Guataquí are agriculture ( corn , bananas , sorghum , cassava and citrus plants ), animal husbandry ( cattle and pigs ), fishing and mining ( limestone ).
