La Calera is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Cundinamarca in Colombia , which for metropolitan Bogotá belongs.

geography

La Calera is located in Cundinamarca in the province of Guavio at an altitude of about 2700 meters, 18 km northeast of Bogotá. The municipality borders Bogotá ( Chapinero district ) and Choachí to the south, Guasca , Sopó and Chía to the north, Guasca to the east and Bogotá ( Usaquén and Chapinero districts) to the west . The river Río Teusacá flows through the municipality .

population

The municipality of La Calera has 28,908 inhabitants, of which 12,629 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

The indigenous name for La Calera was Teusacá . In the Spanish colonial times there was soon a hacienda under its current name at the point where the place is today. The village itself was founded in 1772 by Pedro de Tovar y Buendía , the owner of the hacienda. The name La Calera comes from the nearby limestone mines .

tourism

The main tourist destination in La Calera is a lookout point from which you can look over Bogotá. However, there is also ecotourism and extreme sports . In addition, La Calera is a popular destination for the residents of Bogotá because of its restaurants and nightclubs.
