Medina is a municipality ( municipio ) in the Colombian department of Cundinamarca . Part of the Chingaza Natural Park is located on the territory of the municipality .

geography

Medina is located in the northeast of Cundinamarca in the province of Medina at an altitude of about 520 meters on the east side of the Eastern Cordillera of the Colombian Andes at the transition to the Llanos , 192 km from Bogotá. The average temperature is 25 ° C. The municipality borders in the north on Ubalá , in the east on Paratebueno , in the south on Cumaral in the Departamento del Meta and in the west on Gachalá as well as San Juanito and Restrepo in Meta.

history

Since 1548 the area of ​​today's Medina fell under the encomienda system with which the indigenous people of the Chíos and Mámbitas were exploited. Initially, Medina was part of Chocontá , which was a corregimiento . Since 1775, Medina itself had the status of a corregimientos.

The main industries of Medina are cattle production and agriculture .

Medina has a small regional airport, which is located in the Vereda El Tablón. Medina has road connections to Villavicencio in the Departamento del Meta (via Restrepo and Coumaral ) and to Santa María in the Departamento de Boyacá (via San Pedro de Jagua and Mámbita in the municipality of Ubalá ). Many rivers flow through the community, but they are not navigable.
