Chocontá is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Cundinamarca in Colombia .

geography

Chocontá is located in the northeast of Cundinamarca and is the capital of the province of Almeidas . Chocontá is located on the Bogotá River at an altitude of 2655 meters in the Colombian Andes and has an average annual temperature of 13 ° C. Adjacent to the church in the north Lenguazaque and Villapinzón , east Villapinzón, Tibirita and Macheta , south Sesquile and Macheta and west Suesca .

history

Chocontá goes back to an indigenous settlement. The "new" village was founded in 1563 by Tomás López on a hill on the other side of the Río Funza (today: Río Bogotá ) and moved in 1573 to its present location. In 1854 Tomás Herrera appointed himself Colombian president in Chocontá.
