El Colegio , as Mesitas del Colegio known is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Cundinamarca in Colombia .

geography

El Colegio is located in the west of Cundinamarca in the province of Tequendama at an altitude of 990 meters 61 km from Bogotá and has an average annual temperature of 24 ° C. The Río Bogotá flows through the municipality . The municipality is bordered by La Mesa and Tena in the north, San Antonio del Tequendama and Granada in the east, Viotá in the south and Anapoima and La Mesa in the west .

The municipality of El Colegio has 22,247 inhabitants, of which 8544 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

El Colegio was founded in 1653 by the Archbishop of Santa Fe Cristóbal de Torres and the Governor Juan Fernández de Córdoba y Coalla, who settled the indigenous people of the Achaguas from the Llanos on the site of the present-day town.

The main industries in El Colegio are agriculture (especially coffee growing ), animal husbandry , tourism , hydropower generation and agricultural industry.
