Pedro de Araújo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pedro de Araújo (* around 1640, † around 1705) was a Portuguese organist and composer of the Baroque. He worked in the Archdiocese of Braga in northern Portugal.

Life

The exact dates of life are uncertain. The sources name “1610? –1684?” Or a period of activity between 1640 and 1684 or between 1662 and 1704/1705.

Araújo worked between 1663 and 1668 as a music teacher with the title "mestre de canto" at the seminary of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in Braga and until 1665 as the second cathedral organist at the Cathedral of Braga . In 1665 he took over a benefice in Joane , where he worked until at least 1704.

The British musicologist Macário Santiago Kastner states that the Renaissance art of António Carreira had a lasting impact on Pedro de Araújo. Kastner continued in 1947: "Organists like Cabanilles , Elias, Pedro de Araújo and their contemporaries were the highest pinnacle of the organ style in the Spanish tradition."

Thirteen organ works are certain to be attributed to Araújo and a further six owing to stylistic features. His works contain Aragonese, Italian and Portuguese elements. The best known, and still available in numerous copies at the end of the 17th century, is his musical battle painting for organ Batalha de 6 tom .
