PeerJ is an international open access journal that appears exclusively online and covers all areas of the life sciences and, since the beginning of 2015, has also offered a separate journal for computer science topics under the name PeerJ Computer Science . PeerJ is published by the company of the same name and was founded by publisher Peter Binfield (formerly at PLOS ONE ) and managing director Jason Hoyt (formerly at Mendeley ). The magazine received a grant of US $ 950,000 from O'Reilly Media and O'Reilly AlphaTech Ventures. It was officially launched in June 2012 and has been accepting submissions since December 3, 2012. First articles were published on February 12, 2013.
The specialty of PeerJ is a new type of price model with which Open Access is to be offered significantly more cheaply. From a one-time membership fee of US $ 399, academic authors can publish a peer-reviewed article once a year for life. The usual method of payment per item is also offered for US $ 895 or US $ 1095. Members are obliged to perform peer review services for the journal. The review process should usually also be published.
PeerJ also operates a document server for preprints, also known as the preprint server.
Dorothea Bartels, Professor of Botany, Biochemistry and Physiology of Plants at the University of Bonn and the Nobel Prize Winner for Medicine, Harald zur Hausen , are two German members of the scientific advisory board of PeerJ.
