Peister ash

Ash at Peist station

The Peister ash is a common ash at the train station in the Schanfigger village of Peist in the canton of Graubünden . Today it is considered the oldest of its kind in Europe.

The circumference of their trunk is 9.25 meters at the thickest point, their maximum diameter is 2.87 meters (this at a height of 1.3 meters).

history

The Peister ash was planted around 1660, a generation after the end of the Bündner turmoil . Shortly before, Peist had bought himself out of the Chur court and the sovereignty of the Chur bishop . Possibly the Peister ash was intended as a freedom tree .

The Rhaetian Railway has the Peister ash professionally cared for by the Swiss tree expert Walter Wipfli from Seelisberg .
