Pelican house

The Pelikan house is located at Ritterstraße 9/10 in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg in the former "Rollkutscherviertel".

Origin and history

Pelican relief on the building

It was built from 1902 to 1905 for the banker and owner of the metal goods factory Hompesch & Co. Georg Salomonsohn in the neoclassical style. The plans come from the Berlin architect and building contractor Kurt Berndt , who built other commercial and apartment buildings in Berlin. The largely glazed sandstone facade has a rusticated base and four larger-than-life atlases on the fourth floor, which seem to support the roof, as well as pilasters and pillars . The courtyard facades were given continuous, white faced pillars, plaster parapets and natural stone decorations on the stairwells.

Salomonsohn rented the house to several companies, including the Deutsche Tapisseriefabrik , the Elektrizitäts- und Akkumulatorenwerke Seidelmann & Co. and the Continentale Regamoid Art. Ges. In 1933, the Günther Wagner company and later Pelikan AG moved into the house and brought out the signature “Pelikan-Haus ", As well as the golden medallion with the company logo on the facade.

The listed building was renovated in 2002 and again housed numerous companies. After the Lichttechnische Spezialfabrik Franz Sill GmbH moved out, Berggruen Holdings acquired the vacant building in August 2013 . Including modernization measures, Berggruen Holdings invested almost ten million euros in the building and leased it to the Berlin eyewear manufacturer MYKITA. In August 2014 MYKITA moved from Brunnenstrasse in Mitte to the Pelikan House.
