Pelmatochromis buettikoferi is a species of fish from the cichlid family (Cichlidae) that occurs in West Africa from the upper Casamance in Senegal to the Saint John River in Liberia.

features

Pelmatochromis buettikoferi can reach a total length of 25 cm with females almost the size of males. The body is moderately high and oval, the head and mouth are relatively large. The tail stalk is short and high. The rounded caudal fin is slightly indented.

Pelmatochromis buettikoferi is yellow-brown to medium-brown in color, the back is reddish. The fuselage scales partly have reddish brown centers and bright, shiny edges. The throat is dark, the breast and belly of adults are reddish. Depending on the mood, the fish show five or six dark, vertical stripes on the sides of the body. There is a metallic, shiny, dark spot on the gill cover. The caudal fin and the soft-rayed sections of the dorsal and anal fin are patterned with reddish and light blue dots and lines. The remaining fins and fin sections are translucent yellow. The dorsal fin has a brownish edge. The Pelmatochromis -Fleck, a dark spot below the dorsal fin base, is always clearly visible. In juvenile fish it is higher, sometimes also in the dorsal fin, and moves downwards with increasing age.

Way of life

Pelmatochromis buettikoferi probably feeds on insect larvae and detritus , rather than on plant material. From offspring in aquariums we know that they are open brooders . The fry swim free six to seven days after hatching.
