The Pelorus River is a river in the Marlborough District on New Zealand's South Island .
geography
The river has its source in the Richmond Range and flows mostly in an easterly direction and flows into the Pelorus Sound after about 40 km near Havelock .
The Pelorus River has two major tributaries, the Rai River , which flows into the Pelorus Bridge from the north as a left tributary, and the Wakamarina River , a right tributary that flows into the Pelorus River ten kilometers west of Havelock .
Origin of name
The Pelorus River and the Pelorus Sound got their name in September 1838 from Lieutenant Phillip Chetwode , who named after the ship HMS Pelorus after his landing and exploration of the area Sound and River after the ship on which he sailed. The Māori call the river Te Hoiere .
Use of the river
The upper reaches of the river are popular for whitewater kayaking and fishing. There are some walking tours along the river from the Pelorus Bridge .
