Havelock is a small town in the Marlborough District on the South Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The place was named by the British General Henry Havelock .
geography
Havelock is around 20 km west of Picton and around 43 km northwest of Belenheim , at the end of Pelorus Sound . The New Zealand State Highway 6 runs right through the town. The small settlement of Moenui is three kilometers to the east .
history
During the gold rush in the nearby Wakamarina Valley , the town was founded in 1864 on the banks of Pelorus Sound . Havelock later developed into the center of the wood industry in the region and was the location of several sawmills for wood processing. After 1910 agriculture developed with milk production and the port became a trading center for fishing.
population
In the 2013 census, the town had 486 inhabitants, 0.6% more than in the 2006 census.
economy
The port of Havelock is used today as a marina, while the place developed from 1970 as a location for mussel farming.
tourism
Havelock is the starting point for various tours in the more remote areas of the Marlborough Sounds .
