Pembridge Castle

Pembridge Castle , originally called Newland Castle , is a castle about 1.6 km northwest of the village of Welsh Newton in the English county of Herefordshire . The former border fortress with Wales from the late 12th or early 13th century has been listed by English Heritage as a Grade I Historic Building.

It was probably built before 1208 at the behest of Maud de St Valery . The castle is over 25 miles from the village of Pembridge . It was initially the seat of the Pembridge family and in the 14th and 15th centuries the seat of the Wakes and Mortimer families . The chapel dates from the 16th century and was destroyed in 1644 during the English Civil War. At the beginning of the 20th century, a Dr. Hedley Bartlett carrying out extensive restoration work on the castle. Today it is privately owned.

The castle sits on a 36 meter × 27 meter piece of land and is surrounded by a moat . The walls were built from ashlar , sandstone and quarry stone . The curtain wall is 1.4 meters thick. The oldest part of the castle is probably the Donjon , a four-story round tower in the western corner. The inner diameter of the tower is 7.5 meters and the rooms inside are 5 meters wide.
