particularities | seventh highest mountain in Wales |
Pen yr Ole Wen ( Welsh for "peak of white light" ) is a pyramidal mountain peak in north Wales and is part of the Snowdonia National Park. As the seventh highest mountain in Wales, it has a height of 978 m (3212 ft) and is therefore exactly as high as the highest mountain in England , Scafell Pike . The Pen yr Ole Wen is part of the Carneddau group , a mountain range of 3,000 feet, which also includes the Foel Grach , Yr Elen and Foel Fras . The mean annual air temperature at the summit is 5 ° C.
The summit is a popular and ambitious destination. The shortest route begins in the south at the youth hostel , which is located on the A 5 which passes below the mountain at a height of approx. 300 m. This route has a gradient of 100 percent (1: 2) to be mastered. Much longer and more scenic are either the summit route coming from the north, which begins at approx. 740 m altitude and also leads over the peaks Drum, Foel Fras, Garnedd Uchaf, Foel Grach, Garnedd Llewelyn and Foel Meirch, or the east around the lakes Ffynnon Route leading around Lloer and Ffynnon Llugwy.
