Peniocereus fosterianus is a species of plant in the genus Peniocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). It is named in honor of the American plant collector and bromeliad researcher Mulford Bateman Foster (1888–1978).

description

Peniocereus fosterianus has a shrubby growth with sparsely branched shoots and reaches heights of 60 to 200 centimeters. The carrot-like or bulbous, light brown roots are 6 to 10 centimeters in diameter. The shoots are twofold (dimorphic). Young shoots are three to five-sided and 2 to 20 centimeters long. The mature shoots are olive to dark green, twisting and slender. They are 10 to 105 centimeters long and have a diameter of 8 to 10 millimeters. The dark brown to blackish thorns are inconspicuous. The single, 1 millimeter long central spine is basally thickened to conical. The four to six conical to needle-like radial spines have a length of 1 to 3 millimeters.

The broad, funnel-shaped, fragrant, white flowers open at night. They are 8.5 to 10 inches long. The pericarpel is humped and covered with yellow felt and a few thorns. The obscure pear-shaped, scarlet-red fruits are 3 to 4 centimeters long. They are covered with woolly areoles and needle-like, yellow thorns that fall off when the fruit is ripe.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Peniocereus fosterianus is distributed in the Mexican states of Guerrero , Oaxaca , Chiapas and probably Colima in bushes at altitudes of up to 900 meters. It was first described in 1946 by Ladislaus Cutak .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
