Peniocereus hirschtianus is a species of plant in the genus Peniocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the Berlin cactus lover Karl Hirscht († 1925).

description

Peniocereus hirschtianus grows shrubby with bulbous roots . The slender, upright to semi-upright, overhanging, creeping or prostrate shoots are up to 2 meters long and 2 to 5 centimeters in diameter. There are eight to twelve, low, slightly sharp-edged and often wavy ribs . The three to six strong, grayish central spines are protruding or spread out. They are 8 to 55 millimeters long. The nine to twelve needle radial spines are grayish to brownish and 5 to 10 millimeters long. Some of them are thinner than the rest.

The fragrant, funnel-shaped, white flowers are occasionally tinged with pink and open at night. They are 5 to 7 inches long. Your flower tube is covered with a few short, needle-like thorns. The spherical, fleshy, red fruits reach a diameter of 3 to 5 centimeters. They are covered with areoles from which seven to 15 flexible, 3 to 18 millimeter long thorns arise.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Peniocereus hirschtianus is common in the tropical areas of Guatemala , Nicaragua , Costa Rica and El Salvador .

It was first described as Cereus hirschtianus in 1897 by Karl Moritz Schumann . David Richard Hunt placed the species in the genus Peniocereus in 1991 . A nomenclatory synonym is Nyctocereus hirschtianus (K.Schum.) Britton & Rose . Further synonyms are Cereus neumannii K.Schum. ex Loes. , Nyctocereus neumannii (K.Schum. Ex Loes.) Britton & Rose , Nyctocereus guatemalensis Britton & Rose , Cereus guatemalensis (Britton & Rose) Vaupel , Peniocereus guatemalensis (Britton & Rose) DRHunt and Cereus nyctago A.Berger (nom. Illeg. Art. 52.1).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
