Peniocereus maculatus is a species of plant in the genus Peniocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet maculatus comes from Latin , means 'speckled' and refers to the marbled shoots.

description

Peniocereus maculatus has a shrubby growth with sparsely branched shoots and reaches heights of 1 to 2 meters. The fleshy roots resemble carrots. The cloudy, dark green, sometimes blotchy purple-colored shoots are three to four-winged. They are up to 50 centimeters long and have a diameter of 3 centimeters. There are three to four straight to slightly wavy ribs . The reddish brown to gray thorns are 1 to 3 millimeters long and mostly thickened at their base. There are one to two central spines and usually seven radial spines.

The cream-colored flowers open at night and are 9 to 10 centimeters long. The pericarpel is covered with a few areoles with white wool and a few thorns. The pear-shaped, red fruits are up to 5 centimeters long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Peniocereus maculatus is common in the Mexican state of Guerrero . It was first described as Cereus maculatus in 1933 by Wilhelm Weingart . Ladislaus Cutak placed the species in the genus Peniocereus in 1951 . A synonym is Acanthocereus maculatus (Weing.) Bravo .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Critically Endangered (CR) ", d. H. listed as critically endangered.
