The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archeology and Anthropology ( UPM ), Penn Museum for short , is an archaeological and anthropological research museum of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania . In short, it is also called Penn Museum.

In addition to the collection and exhibitions, the museum is also active in research and museum education . During the Iraq war , the museum started its work in May 2004 under the umbrella of UNESCO, an International Coordinating Committee for Safeguarding Iraq's Cultural Heritage. The UPM is coordinating the documentation on the loss of Iraqi cultural property with other institutions.

The museum director is Julian Siggers.

location

The museum is located on campus in a Beaux Arts style building. It has been extensively renovated since 2006 under the direction of British architect David Chipperfield. history

The UPM as it exists today was founded in 1887 . During the 20th century, museum expeditions were made to Egypt , Mesopotamia , Africa , East Asia and South America . These finds formed the basis of the collections.

Collections / research

The collection includes a large number of artifacts from Egypt, China and Mesopotamia. There are also items from Mesoamerica, antiquity and the pre-Columbian period. There are also exhibits of Buddhist art and the Maya .

Egypt

The collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts is one of the most important in the world. It includes statues, mummies, reliefs and parts of ancient Egyptian buildings, e.g. B. great columns and sphinx from the palace of Pharaoh Merenptah . They came to the museum in 1915 after a UPM excavation.

It also contains papyri , mostly in Greek , including some Oxyrhynchus papyri .

Mesopotamia

The royal tomb from Ur , which was excavated with the British Museum in Iraq , is very significant . Exhibits include crowns, statues and musical instruments. The institute is helping to rebuild the Iraqi National Museum in Baghdad .

Mesoamerica

Between 1956 and 1970 an excavation took place at the temple Tikal of the Maya culture ( Guatemala ) under the direction of the UPM. Many finds are on display, including several steles . The archeology of Mesoamerica is an essential research focus. Numerous important Mesoamericanists work (t) at Penn, such as Jeremy A. Sabloff and Michael D. Coe .

China

The Chinese collection is exhibited in the basement. Old paintings, sculptures, jewelry and vases are shown.

Europe

In Europe, the Museum v. a. active in the exploration of the Paleolithic .

publishing company

The museum has its own publishing house (Pennsylvania Museum Publications) and has published the 48-page magazine Expedition three times a year since 1958 ( ISSN  0014-4738 ). The editor-in-chief is James R. Mathieu.
