history
Penny Lover was released worldwide in September 1984. The song was released as the fifth single from the album Can't Slow Down . It became quite successful in some countries like Germany (37th place), the Netherlands (14th place) and New Zealand (30th place). Just like Stuck on You , this song also achieved great commercial success in the United States : it placed eighth on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and eighth on the Billboard Hot R & B / Hip-Hop charts and number one on the Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary chart.
The song is 3:46 minutes long. On the B-side is the piece Tell Me .
In Billboard magazine was Penny Lover as "another, unfailingly effective, generally appealing ballad " section. Allmusic called Penny Lover like the other ballads on the album as "smooth" but "convincing". The track was named "Track Pick" on the website as a selected track from the album.
Music video
The music video was directed by Bob Giraldi, who also did the same on Running with the Night and Hello . The video shows Richie in a night club , where he plays the piano and sings the piece around, as well as cuddling with a woman in other scenes.
