The Pentagonale was a loose cooperation of five states, which was founded in November 1989 - immediately after the fall of the Wall - on the initiative of Austria (especially Erhard Buseks ) by four foreign ministers in Budapest . A little later, the ČSSR joined it.

As the " pentagon " of Italy , Austria , Yugoslavia , Hungary and Czechoslovakia , the group of states initiated cooperation in the field of culture and science , which was able to build on numerous similarities from the times of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy .

In addition to the expansion of cultural contacts, there were intensive discussions , especially in the field of technology . You should u. a. to a unification of the East long neglected cadastre contribute and also led to successful projects with GPS - surveying and in geophysics . In the first-mentioned areas, common goals were defined relatively quickly, so that Austria and Italy were soon able to provide assistance. In the field of geodynamics , the Czech Republic was the most important initiator, whereby it was able to fall back on surveying projects from the time of Comecon .

In 1991 Poland also expressed the wish to join, which turned the "pentagonale" into the hexagon ( hexagon ). However, the allocation of the hoped-for finances by the participating governments left a lot to be desired. A little later, the discrepancies between Serbia and Croatia began , which made international cooperation more difficult and soon led to the break-up of Yugoslavia.

After a rather fruitless period, the Hexagonale 1992/93 - on an expanded basis - became the Central European Initiative . The first additional members were Bosnia , Croatia and Slovenia , later other countries from Central and Eastern Europe followed.
