The Pentax ME F came on the market in 1981 and was built until 1984. It is based on the ME Super , but has been heavily revised and was the first autofocus single lens reflex camera to be built in series for 35 mm film. It is a milestone in the development of photography . The ME F is part of the Pentax M series , alongside the Pentax ME (1976), Pentax MX (1976), Pentax MV (1979), Pentax ME Super (1980), Pentax MV-1 (1980) and Pentax MG ( 1982).

The camera has a contrast autofocus integrated into the housing, which measures through the lens (TTL) and controls the focusing motor of the SMC Pentax AF 2.8 / 35-70 mm lens specially designed for the ME F , which is the only auto focus lens stayed for this camera. The communication between camera and lens took place via electrical contacts in the bayonet of the camera housing, which could also be used to connect any other lens with a K bayonet to the ME F and thus use it as a manual camera with focusing aid in the viewfinder.

In addition to the focusing motor, the autofocus lens itself also contained a battery compartment for 4 AAA cells of 1.5 V, which made it correspondingly large and heavy. Although the autofocus of the ME F was very slow and also imprecise in poor lighting conditions, it nevertheless became a technological milestone that ushered in the age of autofocus SLR cameras.

Data and equipment features

The Pentax ME F is a 35 mm reflex camera with TTL light measurement. The lens connection is the Pentax-K bayonet , which has been supplemented by some electronic contacts.

Clasp

The lock of the ME F is a vertical Seikogab MFC-E2 lamella lock. The shutter is electronically controlled and offers a shutter speed range from 4 s to 1/2000 s plus B (bulb). The flash sync time is 1/125 s.

Measurement system and measurement characteristics

The measuring system of the ME F measures through the lens (TTL), works center-weighted and is based on a gallium-arsenide-phosphide photodiode.

Self timer

The self-timer on the ME F is mechanical and can be variably adjusted using the self-timer lever.

Viewfinder information

The viewfinder of the ME F offers a large and clear viewfinder image. The exposure metering is indicated by green, yellow and red LEDs to the left of the viewfinder image. Under the viewfinder image there are three more LEDs to assist in focusing (center: green, left and right of it red): if you need to turn the lens to the left to focus, the left LED lights up, to turn the right one to the right and, as soon as the focus is correct, the lights up middle green LED.

casing

The ME F was offered in silver and black.
