PentraSorb

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

PentraSorb is a medical product for extracorporeal use, which is used in a procedure similar to dialysis - more precisely apheresis - to filter the C-reactive protein (CRP) from the blood plasma of patients. It is an approved process and is produced by the Brandenburg company Pentracor in Hennigsdorf near Berlin .

Areas of application

An increased level of CRP in the blood is suspected of causing significantly more severe damage to the affected organs in heart attacks , strokes , moderate and severe courses of COVID-19 as well as chronic inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis and other inflammatory diseases such as rheumatism to care. Studies are currently running (as of June 2020) on the following indications :

A study in heart attack patients has already been completed and another case report appears to confirm the effectiveness of the treatment.

functionality

The PentraSorb CRP adsorber is a plastic housing filled with a CRP-binding ligand . This is connected to a device which pumps the blood plasma through the adsorber in certain cycles. In the adsorber, the ligand ensures a reduction in CRP and is therefore intended, for example, to inhibit the formation of scar tissue after a heart attack. In the event of an acute myocardial infarction, treatment must be initiated within 48 hours of the vascular occlusion, as the concentration of C-reactive protein in the blood is highest during this period.
