People's Party (Malawi)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The People's Party (PP; German: "People's Party") is a political party in Malawi that was founded in 2011 by Joyce Banda .

history

Banda was Vice President at the time, and since 2012 she has been President of Malawi. In 2014, Banda ran for the presidency, but only came third among the applicants.

Joyce Banda founded the People's Party after she was forced to leave the Democratic Progressive Party in a dispute over who was to become the president for 2014. Banda is the party leader. Before 2014, the party had Uladi Mussa , MP from Salima , a member of the Malawian National Assembly . In 2014, the PP won 26 of the 193 seats in the National Assembly. In the 2019 elections it fell to five seats.

Admission as a party

Initially, the People's Party was not officially recognized as a party in 2011. Allegedly the name sounded too similar to that of other parties. However, the Supreme Court ordered the party's approval in 2011.

Alignment

The People's Party is considered socially liberal. She works for Malawi's unity, equality and economic development. In addition, it stands for economic and political freedom, for participation and decentralization as well as peace and human dignity. She also demands affordable prices.
