The Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey carried out geodetic surveys of the lower section of the glacier in 1947 and the upper section of the glacier in 1955. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1957 after the whaling ship Pequod in Herman Melville's 1851 novel Moby-Dick .
