Per Bäckström (* 1959 ) is a Swedish literary scholar and university professor.

Bäckström is Professor of Comparative Literature at Linnaeus University in Växjö , Sweden. He worked as Professor of Comparative Literature from 2010 to 2019 at Karlstad University and from 1996 to 2010 as a lecturer at the Department of Culture and Literature at Tromsø University in Norway. In 2007 he was involved in the founding of the European Network for Studies on Avant-garde and Modernism (EAM) and headed the Membership Commission from 2007 to 2011.

He has published studies on Bruno K. Öijer , Henri Michaux , Gunnar Ekelöf , Michail Bachtin , intermediality , grotesque , concrete poetry , performance , avant-garde and the neo-avant-garde. He critically read Michael Riffaterre's Semiotics of Poetry, in which he introduces Riffaterre's theory, explaining why it was unsuccessful, and criticizing it for what he believed to be a lack of consistency with experimental poetry. In particular, he examined the use of the terms “modern” and “avant-garde” in Romance languages ​​compared to English, and the role of the peripheries in relation to the alleged centers of the avant-garde in the 20th century. He is currently working on the Swedish avant-garde Öyvind Fahlström and the anti-aesthetics of rock music .
