Per Højholt

Per Højholt (born July 22, 1928 in Esbjerg , † October 15, 2004 in Silkeborg ) was a Danish writer . Together with Inger Christensen, he is one of the most important and innovative modern poets in his language.

Life

Until 1965 Højholt worked as a librarian; then he worked as a freelance writer. In 1949 he made his debut with the volume of poetry «The Horse and the Sun». He banished the feelings from the poem, experimented radically and became the grand master of concrete poetry. In "Punkt" (1971), Højholt reduced the book to a medium and an object, which was presented as a cardboard box containing 34 plexiglass plates, some of which were labeled, which can be arranged as you wish. As the author explains in “Cézanne's Method”, the work of art refuses to accept judgment, testimony and reference and is a useless and meaningless “show”. The means is an end. Højholt excelled as a self-promoter and reciter of his texts. He celebrated true triumphs with the satirical "Gitte Monologues" (1981), so that in his person the elitist and the popular were combined in a very Danish way.

His works published in Germany include the volume of poems and prose “Der Kopf des Poeten” (1998) and the novel “Auricula” (2003). In 1982 he received the Grand Prix of the Danish Academy , in 1995 the Danish Critics' Prize . Højholt spent most of his life in Hørbylunde near Silkeborg ; he died after a long illness.
