Perambalur ( Tamil : பெரம்பலூர் ), Perampalūr [ ˈpeɾʌmbaluːr ] is a city in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu . It is located in the central interior of Tamil Nadu, around 250 kilometers southwest of the capital Chennai . The national highway NH 45 from Chennai to Tiruchirappalli runs through Perambalur. The nearest train station is in Ariyalur, 28 kilometers southeast. The population is around 50,000 (2011 census). Perambalur is the administrative seat of the district of the same name .

Rice, sugar cane, peanuts and sesame are grown in the surrounding fields. The irrigation is mainly done by wells from the groundwater. The sugar cane is processed in Perambalur in the Nehru Sugar Factory .

87 percent of Perambalur's residents are Hindus , 9 percent are Muslims and 4 percent are Christians . As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 97 percent of the population as their mother tongue.
