The perch salmonid (Percopsiformes) are an order in freshwater of North America living bony fish (Osteichthyes).

features

As the name suggests, they combine characteristics of the perch-like (Perciformes) (spiny rays at the beginning of the dorsal fin) with those of the salmon-like (Salmoniformes) ( adipose fin , but can also be absent). However, they are only distantly related to both fish groups (at least somewhat closer to the perch-like than to the salmon-like) and, as part of the Paracanthopterygii, belong to the closer relationship of the cod-like . Perch fish have a premaxillary (a bone of the upper jaw) that cannot be turned forward and six Branchiostegal rays . Most species have ctenoid scales . The pelvic fins , if they are present, stand behind the pectoral fins and are supported by three to eight soft rays. There are rather soft hard rays in the dorsal fin. The caudal fin is supported by 16 branched fin rays. The fish have 27 to 35 vertebrae .

Systematics

There are three families, seven genera and nine species.

The perch fish have been identified with Amphiplaga , Erismatopterus , Lateopisculus and Massamorichthys fossils from the Eocene 50 million years ago.
