from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Percy Jones (* 26. December 1892 in Porth , Wales ; † 25. December 1922 ) was a British boxer in the flyweight .

Professional career

Born into a charcoal burner family on Boxing Day , Jones began his professional career in 1911 . On January 26, 1914, he boxed against Bill Ladbury for the universal world championship and won by a unanimous decision of the judges. Jones was the first Welshman to do that. He lost the title, however, already in the first title defense in May of the same year to Eugene Criqui on points.

In 1916 he ended his career after 52 fights with 46 wins. Jones became a member of the Royal Welch Fusiliers , rose to the rank of sergeant, and suffered a serious leg injury during World War I. Numerous, ultimately unsuccessful (the leg had to be amputated) operations were the result; in addition there were poison gas phenomena. In 1922 he died of trench fever .
