Percy Oliver

Percival "Percy" Cole Oliver (born April 1, 1919 in Nedlands City , Western Australia , † July 9, 2011 ) was an Australian swimming athlete who took part in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin .

Life

Oliver, who attended Hale School in Nedlands City, was the first Western Australian to join the Australian Olympic team alongside swimmer Evelyn de Lacy. At the 1936 Summer Olympics, he was part of the Australian team and after a second place in the fifth preliminary and a third place in the first semifinals, he was seventh in the finals of the 100 m freestyle swimming in a time of 1: 01.0 minutes.

At the British Empire Games in Sydney in 1938 , he won the gold medal in the 110-yard backstroke and a bronze medal in the so-called 3 × 110-yard medley. He also won a total of 13 Australian championship titles in back and freestyle swimming .

After completing his active athletic career, he became a teacher at Mount Lawley Senior High School in Mount Lawley, a suburb of Perth , before becoming director of the Department of Education's recreational swimming program.
