Pereskia zinniiflora is a species of plant in the genus Pereskia from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet zinniiflora means 'with flowers like zinnia'. Spanish common names are "Abrojo" and "Erizo".

description

Pereskia zinniiflora grows tree-like or shrubby and reaches heights of 4 to 6 meters. The brown, smooth or longitudinally fissured trunk has a diameter of up to 25 centimeters. The narrow elliptical or egg-shaped leaf blade of the leaves is 1 to 4 inches long and 1 to 1.5 inches wide and widest in the middle. The pinnate-shaped nerve of the leaf blade has two to three indistinct lateral nerves. The midrib protrudes from the underside of the leaf. The areoles are covered with conspicuous, rust-brown wool. On the branches there are up to five thorns per areole that are 0.7 to 3 centimeters long. On the trunk, 30 to 80 thorns are formed per areole, which have a length of 2 to 3 centimeters.

The pink to slightly reddish, unisexual flowers appear individually and reach a diameter of 3 to 4 centimeters. The depressed spherical fruits have a diameter of 1.4 to 2 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Pereskia zinniiflora is widespread in the south and southwest of Cuba in the lowlands.

The first description was in 1828 by Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle . A synonym is Rhodocactus zinniiflorus (DC.) FMKnuth .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
