Perigonia is a genus of butterflies from the family of swarmers (Sphingidae).
features
The small, predominantly brown colored moths have, depending on the species, a yellowish-orange area on the hind wings of varying degrees . In most species, the outer edges of the front wings are concave and slightly wavy, they can also be fluted in some species. The body is stocky and mostly dark brown in color. Only in some species is a slightly lightened band visible on the third and fourth abdomen segment. The morphology of the genitals is similar to that of the genus Aellopos .
The well-known caterpillars look very similar and are very variable in their color and therefore easy to confuse.
Occurrence and way of life
The genus is neotropically distributed, only Perigonia lusca occurs in North America . The way of life of only a few species is known. The caterpillars of the most studied in this respect species feed on Rötegewächsen (Rubiaceae).
Systematics
15 species of the genus are known worldwide, although their taxonomic position within the genus is still partly unclear.
