Life

Youth and education

Barrena was born on November 1, 1965 in Pamplona, Navarra. His father, José María Barrena Inza, was the socialist mayor of Berriozar . He completed an apprenticeship at the Técnico Superior in the field of international trade. Barrena also studied international relations at the Universidad Abierta de Cataluña .

Barrena worked as a professional translator for Txalaparta publishing house in Tafalla, translating Basque and English.

Political engagement in the Basque Country

Barrena began to get involved in the left Basque separatist movement Ezker abertzalea as a teenager . He was a city councilor in Berriozar from 1984 to 1999.

In 1985 Barrena was arrested for the first time for ties to the separatist Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA). In 1998 he rose to the top of the Herri Batasuna together with Arnaldo Otegi and Joseba Permach , after the previous leadership was arrested because of ties to the ETA. Barrena's language skills led him to represent the party internationally. In 1998 he became a member of the party's national executive body and was the party's spokesman from 2001 to 2008. Barrena took part in the regional elections in Navarre in 1999 as a candidate for the electoral alliance Euskal Herritarrok and was elected to the Parliament of Navarre.

In 2001 Barrena became a member of the national executive of the newly founded Batasuna , the successor to the dissolved Herri Batasuna. In 2003 he ran as the top candidate in the 2003 regional elections in Navarra for the autodeterminaziorako Bilgunea alliance . However, the Spanish Supreme Court annulled the list because it saw the electoral alliance as the successor to Batasuna, which was banned in March 2003.

After the deaths of two ETA prisoners, Igor Angulo Iturrate and Roberto Sainz del Olmo , Basque nationalists organized a strike in March 2006 that led to violence in Navarre and the Basque Country. Barrena and other Batasuna leaders were arrested on the orders of Judge Fernando Grande-Marlaska, who held them responsible for attacks by the strikers. Barrena was released after paying a bail of € 200,000.

In 2007 Barrena ran again in the 2007 regional elections in Navarra for the electoral alliance Nafarroako Abertzale Sozialistak , which was also canceled by the Supreme Court. On February 4, 2008, a conference was held at Hotel Tres Reyes, Pamplona, attended by Batasuna , the Basque Nationalist Party and the Socialist Party of the Basque Country , attended by Batasuna leaders Barrena, Patxi Urrutia and Unai Fanorekin . Barrena and Urrutia were arrested on February 4, 2008 on the orders of Judge Baltasar Garzón for “supporting the activities of an illegal political party”. Barrena was released on February 3, 2010 on bail of € 50,000.

From 2012 to 2016 Barrena was co-spokesman for the new Basque party Sortu .
